i totally didn’t mention that i went to a company christmas party last saturday night. it was out in the country at odell barnes’ house. in case you didn’t know, he’s the “foreclosure king”. probably the richest man in the state. his place was awesome. best described as a redneck who came into money and didn’t know what to do with it except buy cool redneck shit.

my date was there to get laid (by me or some rich dude’s wife). he got wasted and acted like a dickhead the entire time. i had fun drinking for free and dancing to the sweet jambs that the dj kept dishin’ out. there was this gorgeous good ol’ boy who kept eye-ballin’ me. i gave him my number only to never see him again. lost him to a sorority girl will tall pointy shoes and tight jeans.

after dropping my date, sir drunks-a-lot off at the bar, i went with beth (and some friends) to the strip club. which sucked because they quit serving booze when we got there.

all in all, i learned that money can buy you lots of cool crap and lots of friends. also, never have a drunk asshole who tries to put his dick in anything as a date to a company party. and, when going to the strip club, get there earlier than 2am.

after meeting friends for dinner, diana and i went to a house show to see an acoustic show. our friend brandon opened the show, followed by another local act, josh small. then the two touring musicians, austin lucas and mike hale both performed a set together. they alternated between songs written by lucas and hale throughout the evening and sang amazing harmonies throughout the night.

this video is of them performing one of hale’s songs (i believe).

there were so many little things about this show that made it perfect. first off, the setting was nothing like your typical house show. instead of a sweaty dank basement, we were all squeezed into the living room and the whole night had this really intimate warm feel to it. there was no PA, no microphones, just these two guys and a room full of people silently appreciating or quietly singing along to themselves.

both austin and mike had drank a good bit of wine before their set started, which can sometimes make for a really BAD set, but for these guys - it was perfect. the booze opened them up and they talked really openly and honestly about their songs in a humorous way which was pretty refreshing. a lot of singer/songwriter types take themselves a little too seriously and this was not the case. they both talked about how they’d been on tour for 10 months out of the year and 5 of those months were spent together. you could tell. the harmonies were spot on and you could really tell that these two singers had a lot of love for each other and their respective music. it was pretty much a sad bastard country acoustic love fest bromance going on and we were all into it.

i started thinking during the show about what it must be like to tour 10 months out of the year. my various bands toured a lot and never got close to that. it just really hit the point home of how hard this lifestyle really was. at the end of the show, i bought some records and hopefully that helped get the van a little further down the road this week. although, i probably would have bought records if they were on a tour bus too. they were just really really good heartfelt performers and it really shown through at last night’s show.

i knew eventually our friend paths would cross. josh small is a friend of mine, who i met through nathan ellis (who i’m about 99% sure is one of the guys sitting in the floor in this video). i’ve only met austin once, however. he stayed at my house last time they were in town for the revival tour. and austin is playing at the bar near my house, new brookland tavern, tomorrow night. all of these men are incredible musicians.

This is Bill. I found this going through shit I had uploaded to facebook, added about a year ago. Here is the caption I wrote:

“This guy is one of my favorite regulars at house coffee. He’s just like the dude. Right now He’s telling me about living in a mafia hotel in cleveland with his stripper sister then hitchiking out in the winter because it got too cold.”

He still comes in every Sunday and he tells me awesome stories. Last week he told me about being out in LA and not having a Christmas tree so he went down to the grocery store (stoned out of his mind) and stole one. He said he was running down the street with this tree on his shoulder like someone was chasing him, but when he turned around no one was there. A couple days later he said the cops came knocking on the door and he “took off out the back door and didn’t go back to LA for about three years.” He is an incredible man.

i miss bill. i need to start hanging out with him at the coffee shop on sundays while you’re working. he could drop a lot of wisdom on me.

finally watched a clip from ikea heights. okay…i like it. i honestly thought it would be really dumb, but it’s fun. i will make a point to go back and watch all the episodes now.
